  • 2017 UpSCRC Championships and NSCRCO Playoffs
    Nov, 13th 2017

The past two weekends have produced some great playoff matches for both our Conference Championships and the NSCRO Region 1 Qualifier matches.

On 11/4/17, Paul Smith's took on Alfred for the Conference Champions Cup Championship. Clarkson and Canisius faced off for the Challenge Cup Championship. Both matches were played at O'Connor Park, the home of the Syracuse Chargers RFC.

Clarkson outlasted Canisius, with a winning score of 15-14. By virtue of their win, Clarkson advances to the NSCRO Region 1 (East Coast) Challenge Cup Final Four, on 11/18-19/17.

In the Conference Champions Cup division match, Alfred and Paul Smith's played a close match for the first 40 minutes. Alfred then opened up their scoring in the second half and when the final whistle blew the score was Alfred 53 - Paul Smith's 19. The win earned Alfred a home field NSCRO Qualifier match against SUNY Maritime, the Tri-State #2 team. Paul Smith's also earned a birth into the Qualifier rounds and went on the road to face Vassar, Tri-State's #1 team.

Both Alfred and Paul Smith's played well, while representing UpSCRC in their NSCRO Qualifiers. Paul Smith's coach, Mark Buckley, reports that his team lead most of the match, until Vassar scored with about seven minutes left in the match. With little time remaining on the clock, Paul Smith's took possession of the ball in their defending try zone. They kept the ball alive, advancing it 105 yards, to score the match winning Try about 2 minutes past the end of regulation time.

Alfred went into their match, against Maritime, with a goal of protecting their undefeated record and moving on to the Region 1 Championships. The first 20 minutes saw the teams exchanging scores, with Maritime taking a 7-5 lead. However, three unanswered scores put Alfred ahead at half time by a score of 24-7. Maritime opened the second half with a quick try, before Alfred showed their season long ability to open up the scoring. By the time the final whistle blew, Alfred protected their unblemished record with a 46-17 win.

Alfred and Paul Smith's (Champions Cup) now join Clarkson (Challenge Cup) at the Region 1 Champions Cup Championships, scheduled for11/18-19/17 at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Art, in North Adams, MA. Match ups at MCLA are:

    Clarkson v. Washington & Lee
    Paul Smith's v. Salve Regina
    Alfred v. UMaine Farmington

The top two teams in each of our two regions began the playoff season on 10/28/17. The match summary and the set up for next Saturday's Champions Cup and Challenge Cup Championships are:

In the West, Alfred defeated Ithaca by a score of 37-15. The match was decided at the end of double OT, with Paul Smith's defeating Plattsburgh by a final score of 31 - 26.

Following the completion of the matches, both Alfred and Paul Smith's announced that they have opted to move up to the NSCRO Champions Cup pathway, so the will meet next Saturday for our UpSCRC Champions Cup Final in Syracuse. Both of these teams will automatically move onto the NSCRO Northeast Qualifier matches on 11/11. The winner will host the Tri-State #2 team and our second place team travels to face the Tri-State #1.

As a result of Alfred and Paul Smith's moving up, Clarkson and Canisius face each other in next w.e.'s Challenge Cup Final, also in Syracuse on 11/11. If either team decides not to advance, we'll follow the current NSCRO format and will not back fill - the other team is declared the Challenge Cup winner and thus advances.

The UpSCRC Championship matches will be held on 11/4 at the home of the Syracuse Chargers RFC. The O'Connor Park venue is located at 301 Velasko Road, Syracuse NY 13219.

Match schedule for the Saturday Championships will be: Noon for the Challenge Cup and 2:00 for the Champions Cup. Challenge Cup Player Check-ins will start at 10:30 a.m. and the Champions Cup Teams will check in after that but no later than half time of the Challenge Cup Match.

  • 2016 Championships and NSCRO Playoff Advancement
    Nov, 7th 2016

On 11/5/16, the UpSCRC Championships for both the Champions Cup and Challenge Cup pathways were played at Cass Park in Ithaca. A special thanks to Annmarie Farrell and the Ithaca players for all their work and special attention to detail, in making this a memorable occasion for all players, coaches and fans.

The day started with the Challenge Cup match between Paul Smith's and Alfred. During the past week, Paul Smith's had reassembled their team, after learning Clarkson was not going to be able to play. Both teams looked to be equally matched during the first half, with Alfred up at Half Time by a sore 15 - 8. Then Alfred then scored 4 Tries in the second half, mainly on open field breakaways, with Paul Smith’s putting up points for one Try and a Drop Goal. Alfred looks to be be tough as they gear up for the East Coast Challenge Cup Championships, on 11/19-20/16 in Maryland. During our Awards presentation, Alfred’s # 12 Nathan Auernhamer was named the Man of the Match.

All in attendance then watched a great Champions Cup match - with the momentum going back and forth. Ithaca started the match with 3 unanswered Tries in the first 14 minutes. The teams then exchanged two Tries each going in the Half, with Ithaca leading 22-21. Plattsburgh started the second half the way Ithaca started the match, scoring on 1 Penalty Kick and 2 quick unanswered Tries. Then very late in the match Ithaca score 2 more Tries while Plattsburgh had another PK. In the end Plattsburgh came out on top of this hard fought match, by a close score of 39 -36. The Man of the Match award was presented to Plattsburgh's Scrum-Half Forrest Morgan.

Plattsburgh and Ithaca will both join Alfred as UpSCRC representatives into the NSCRO National Playoff system. They both advance into the Northeast Champions Cup pathway. On 11/19-20/16 Plattsburgh will travel to Eastern Connecticut State as our #1 seed in the Northeast Champions Cup final four. Ithaca's path begins on 11/12/16, as they travel to Saratoga to face the yet to be determined NERFU runner up, in a Qualifier match. The winner in Saratoga will earn the fourth team berth for the for the 11/19-20/16 Championships at Eastern Connecticut. In an interesting twist, Plattsburgh is scheduled to face the Saratoga qualifying team in their first match. So if Ithaca is successful next week in Saratoga, there will be a rematch between them and Plattsburgh!

Good Luck and Safe Travels to our all three of our NSCRO playoff bound teams

  • NSCRO Northeast Championships
    Nov, 22nd 2015

On 11/21-22/15, East Connecticut Sate University hosted the Northeast Region Champions Cup Finals. These Championships are referred by many folks as the National "Sweet 16". Representing UpSCRC in Connecticut were the University of Rochester and Plattsburgh State.

In the first match of the day, the University of Rochester faced Eastern Connecticut. U of R Captain, Ruairi Conway, reports that U of R put up "a solid fight" but couldn't overcome the power of ECSU. ECSU won the match 49-0, putting U of R into Sunday's third place match.

Saturday's second match pitted SUNY Plattsburgh against SUNY Oneonta. The Tri-State Champion was no match for Plattsburgh, who dominated in a 86-17 victory. Plattsburgh's win moved them onto Sunday's Championship against ECSU.

On Sunday, Rochester made up for their first round loss by handling Oneonta with a 74-12 victory. This win gave Rochester a third place finish at the NSCRO N.E. Region Championships.

NSCRO President Steve Cohen reports that Sunday's Championship match between Plattsburgh and ECSU, came down to the final play of the match. The host team defeated a strong Plattsburgh side by a score of 24-20. Kudos go out to second place Plattsburgh, for holding the NERFU Champion to their fewest points and the lowest point differential of the Fall season. ECSU moves onto the NSCRO National Champions Cup Final Four, held on April 30- May 1, 2016 at Infinity Park in Glendale Colorado.

  • Saratoga Northeast Qualifiers
    Nov, 15th 2015

On 11/14/15, The Upstate Small College Rugby Conference hosted the Northeast Qualifier Matches for both the Champion Cup and Challenge Cup pathways, in Saratoga, NY.

In the first match of the day, SUNY Plattsburgh faced the University of Maine - Orono for the right to move onto next weekend's Northeast Regional Championship. The match was closely contested, with momentum changing hands a few times. Going into the final minute of the match it appeared that Maine would take home the victory. Up to that point, both teams had scored two Tries with Maine converting both, while Plattsburgh missed their conversion kicks. However, on the final play of the match, Plattsburgh's Forrest Morgan broke loose near mid-field to score the game winning Try. This hard fought match ended with a 19-17 victory for Plattsburgh, giving them the fourth spot in the Regional Championships next weekend. They will join the University of Rochester, our Conference Champion, at the Regionals - giving UpSCRC two of the four playoff spots.

The second match, pitted Salem State against Canisius College, for the right to move onto the East Region Challenge Cup Championships in Maryland. Several recent injuries and a few academic commitments found Canisius traveling from Buffalo, with a roster of only 17 players. Salem State on the other hand, came strong and started the scoring in the first minute of the match. Two additional early Tries put them immediately in control of the match. Despite Salem's dominant performance, the Canisius players never gave up. Salem went on to a 61-12 victory and the right to represent the Northeast Region in Maryland.

  • 2015 Season Will Begin
    Aug, 28 2015

The Fall 2015 season begins in just two weeks. As we prepare for another successful year, we welcome Hamilton College and Hobart College to UpSCRC, both coming to us from the DII ranks. This expansion now leaves us with a full schedule in both the North and West regions.

This may be a good time to begin preparation of documents and forms that are required for all teams, as referenced in our Policy Handbook (see Section 8D). Remember to complete your NSCRO Player Eligibility Verification (PEV) form, as soon as possible and submit to your school Administrator for students' status verification. Once signed by a School Administrator, the PEV needs to be forwarded to Director of 15's Competition, Mark Buckley at BuckleyM@willex.com.

The winner of each match must e-mail the Match Scores/Number of Tries to Mark Buckley at BuckleyM@willex.com, by 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. However, the earliest it is sent will be appreciated. Example: Paul Smiths (21/3) v. Eagles (8/1). Commissioner Bill Krecker (not2old2ruck@netscape.net) will need to be CC:ed the match scores/ties, for posting on the website. Additionally, both teams must e-mail a scanned copy of their Match Roster Form (signed off by opposing Team prior to kick off), by Sunday 6:00 p.m. Since the PEV's are not expected to be signed off before the beginning of the season, Mark Buckley will compare the PEV with previously submitted Weekly Match reports for eligibility compliance.

Section 8D of our Policy Handbook, spells out the Match Play Guidelines. Last year there was a least one major issue regarding player eligibility, therefore were encourage all teams to be familiar with the pre-match guidelines and to follow them weekly.
